Miet Warlop is synonymous with rock ‘n’ roll. And this will also hold true for ONE SONG. At the request of Milo Rau, Artistic Director of NTGent, the visual artist looks back at her personal theatre history. ONE SONG – Histoire(s) du Théâtre IV is based on the well-known documentary series Histoire(s) du cinéma by the French film-maker Jean-Luc Godard, dedicated to the key moments in European cinema. After Faustin Linyekula, Angélica Liddell and Rau himself, Warlop is only the fourth director to be afforded the honour of creating a work in this series. Eight performers, including Warlop herself, together perform a song that culminates in an expression of happiness and energy. As always, Warlop’s world is brimming with visual poetry and humour, with this time all manner of allusions to sport and sitcoms. The artist incorporates echoes of her theatre debut Sportband/afgetrainde klanken from 2005, a requiem for her dead brother, but also shows us her inspirations for future projects. ONE SONG, which will premiere during the Festival d'Avignon, will be an imploring ritual about parting, life and death, hope and revival.
