Atropa
Atropa sings about the taboos of a young, emancipated generation in the language she understands best: pumping beats and razor-sharp poetry. Naomi Velissariou creates a linguistic bacchanal in which the struggle for power makes way for a celebration of vulnerability. Greek women come into contact with Trojan women, who following the occupation of their city choose death rather than a life of oppression. At the end of the battle, it falls to the only man to defend the values of the survivors … Atropa. De wraak van de vrede (Atropa. Avenging peace) was written in 2008 by Tom Lanoye and premiered that same year at the Festival d'Avignon, directed by Guy Cassiers. In Velissariou’s version, Atropa is a tragedy as originally intended: a linguistic celebration set to music, in honour of contemporary gods.
