Nicolas Stemann has already surprised us with Goethe's 'Faust I' and 'Werther!'. Now we are co-producing his production of the German classic 'Nathan der Weise' by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Stemann asked the writer and Nobel Prize winner Elfride Jelinek to provide an up-to-date commentary on the original text. Swiss and French actors perform this new version against a background of terrorism inspired by religion.
The old, wise Jew Nathan has lost his wife and children as a result of two arson attacks provoked by religious hatred. Despite this, he harbours no feelings of resentment or revenge. All his love goes to his adoptive Christian daughter Recha. "Vous avez volé l'amour de ma vie, mais vous n'aurez pas ma haine." (Testimony of a victim who lost his wife in the attacks in Paris on 13 November 2015).
