Nona Demey Gallagher reimagines Don Quixote on stage.
With Don Quixote: Which Was a Dream, theatre-maker Nona Demey Gallagher casts a new light on the courtly romance.Cervantes’ picaresque epic splinters into a witty sketch of our zeitgeist.
Demey, a graduate of KASK in Ghent and a member of the Krapp collective, previously appeared at DE SINGEL with A Room Of His Own. For this new production, she draws inspiration from the radical adaptation of Don Quixote by cult feminist writer Kathy Acker.
Her Don Quixote begins not with a knightly calling, but in an abortion clinic. From there, it meanders through a satirical universe in which literature, politics, and pop culture collide. At her side is no Sancho Panza, but a barking dog who takes on the role of lover. After all, what is love in an inequitable world which forces us into boxes and roles?
In a multimedia universe of live music, video fragments, and grotesque costumes, an existential quest unfolds as a parody.Don Quixote thus becomes a comedic but sobering quest that reveals human relationships to be chaotic, painful, but above all, indispensable.
