1h 25' When Roland Gunst moved from Africa to Flanders, he had mixed feelings about ‘our’ Flemish lion. It is frightening, because it has been hijacked by the extreme right as a symbol of a ‘pure’ Flemish identity. Gunst, who is Flemish with a Congolese mother, therefore feels like an interloper in his own country. But he also longs for a Lion of Flanders which will free his people. A black lion like the one on the flag. In ‘Flandria’, ‘King Lion I’ of Flanders has to find a permanent solution to the integration issue. In a mystical ritual with the damsel Flandria, played by the soprano Emma Posman and with music performed by the Kugoni Trio, Gunst stages the creation of an Afropean Kingdom in our region. Symbols from the Flemish and Congolese cultures merge into one…
