2h 15' In his 1835 treatise, the French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville looks in awe at the young American democracy. That is Castellucci's starting point: for the first time, a European turned his gaze from the Athenian model of democracy. In his view, the roles in our democracy are the opposite of the Greek. Its shadow-side lay in tragedy. Democracy in America flourished separately from its Greek roots under a sun that casts no shadow. The performance deals with the present day. One theme links a series of heterogeneous images: the democracy of the human race. 'La Democrazia in America' is not intended to be political, but polemic. "The gods are no longer present, but not dead either. There is no God anymore but the city where man lives has not yet been born."
