1h This new production for the large stage by Romeo Castellucci, for which deSingel is coproducer, is based on the life of the prophet Moses. In the adventures of this extraordinary biblical figure, the enigmatic Italian theatre-maker sees something extra that touches on the very essence of our era. From the time he was discovered as a new-born baby on the banks of the Nile, through the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, to his return after forty days and the worship of the golden calf by his people: in Romeo Castellucci’s view these episodes are precisely what we need to make us think about our society. Nevertheless, he has no intention of presenting Moses as a specific character. ‘Go down, Moses’ is conceived as a series of tableaux vivants that plumb the depths of our psyche. The title refers to the famous gospel song of American slaves that made the return of the Jewish people from their exile in Babylon and Egypt a prophetic metaphor for their return to Africa. Perhaps it is a call to an exodus from the invisible slavery in which, according to the maker, we find ourselves today?
