Satoko Ichihara rewrites tragic legend into a disruptive and provocative puppet show.
In 2011, Satoko Ichihara received the prestigious Aichi Arts Foundation Drama Award for her debut Insects. Since then, the Japanese writer and director has been an integral part of the international theatre landscape. Her work can regularly be seen at key festivals, including the German Theater der Welt and the Japanese Aichi Triennale. In Yaroboshi: the Weakling Ichihara reinterprets the ancient Japanese legend Shuntokumaru. A tragic tale about a boy who goes blind with grief after being neglected by his family. Inspired by Japanese Bunraku theatre, Ichihara turns it into a puppet show. What happens when social taboos such as incest and paedophilia are transferred to dolls? Ichihara replaces the traditional Bunraku dolls with sex dolls and mannequins that are manipulated by humans, and which perform their desires. Actress Sachiko Hara guides us through the story as a narrator, while experimental musician Kakushin Nishihara creates a special sound composition with a traditional Japanese lute, noise and electronic music. A disruptive and unmissable theatre experience.
