Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui - Theater Stap
Ook
In 2002, Cherkaoui was a guest director with the Turnhout theatrical company Stap, where he created this touching piece of movement theatre called 'OOK' ('TOO'). Stap grew out of a day-care centre for fifteen mentally handicapped people with a love of the theatre. 'OOK' is filled with dreams. Some of those dreams could come true, others are too far-fetched or ambitious… Driving a car, becoming a doctor, a singer in a boys' band, getting a new face, travelling by bicycle. 'OOK' shows a world that is overflowing with information, but lacks the means to interpret that information. This is illustrated by the press cuttings, chosen by the actors themselves, that make up the set. There is a great deal of information, but what is real, and what is true? Is the man holding a knife a killer, or is he about to cut the cake? Everything always needs to be interpreted and judged. Nothing is fixed and clear-cut. There are other possibilities too.
