Silvia Costa composes a tableau vivant of figures and visions
The Italian director and writer Silvia Costa is celebrated all over the world. She is a welcome guest at international arts festivals and in opera houses. At the root of La Femme au marteau lie the six piano suites from the Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya, Dmitri Shostakovich’s only female pupil. Her courageous music was seldom played in 1950s Russia. Musicologist Elmer Schönberger once described her as "the woman with the hammer" due to her powerful, hard compositions. For each of the six sonatas, Silvia Costa composes a tableau vivant, a visual story consisting of figures and visions. In this she is accompanied by the renowned pianist Marino Formenti.
