Tiago Rodrigues blends timeless tragedy with contemporary pain in Hécube, pas Hécube.
In his debut at the Comédie-Française, Tiago Rodrigues – renowned author, director and driving force behind the Avignon Festival, presents a compelling interpretation of the story of Hecuba, the tragic queen of Troy. Rodrigues is known for intertwining stories with current themes, and presents an impressive amalgamation of Euripides' timeless tragedy with the personal story of a contemporary actress and mother. This woman is confronted with torments that mirror those of Hecuba.
In Hécube, pas Hécube Rodrigues introduces a woman of unprecedented power. An actress plays the role of Hecuba, the widow of King Priamus, who loses everything in the aftermath of Troy's fall: her husband, her kingdom, her freedom and almost all her children. Her struggle for justice takes place not only in the old myth, but also in the contemporary reality of the actress, whose autistic son has been the victim of ill-treatment. She wants to expose this disgraceful situation.
The rehearsal time is superimposed on the time of the judicial investigation. In a unique and shadowy setting, two worlds collide, between the tragedy of the myth and that of reality, between the performance of theatre and that of justice.
