Futuristic drama of a father and daughter across space
The performances of the Portuguese actor and director Tiago Rodrigues also have something of a Belgian vibe. He is now the director of the prestigious Festival d’Avignon, but as a student, he fell under the spell of theatre collective tg STAN and their rejection of the hierarchy between actors and directors. For his third appearance at DE SINGEL, he worked closely with actors Adama Diop and Alison Dechamps. They play a father and daughter in the longest long-distance relationship imaginable: with 225 million kilometres between them.
Two stages revolve around one another in perpetual motion. On one stands the daughter, who lives on Mars with part of humanity. On the other is the father, who remains on Earth. In 2077, the Earth is in an even worse state than it is today. Because of the rotation, they can never see each other. Only the audience can see and hear them, in turn, never together. Fragments of telephone conversations between the two tell their story. The rotating platform accelerates and decelerates to a lyrical rhythm of music and light. La Distance is both futuristic and realistic, but above all, it is an intimate and emotional experience. Mars has never felt so close.
