Annelies Van Parys is resident composer at Muziektheater Transparant. After her composition for the successful production ‘Ruhe’ and the impressive ‘An Oresteia’, Van Parys continued her course in the world of musical theatre. ‘Private View’, which she wrote for the OPERA XXI festival, is her first real opera. With the suspense of a true thriller, the tension of a whodunit, a sense of humour and an intricate web of references to Hitchcock's innovative imagery.
For ‘Private View’ she worked with the Scottish poet Jen Hadfield, winner of the TS Eliot Prize, and the Irish director Tom Creed. The Dutch 33⅓ Collective is responsible for the video film and set design.
‘Private View’ draws you into the view of a voyeur who invades the lives of others, and goes in search of meaning. But do our eyes really tell us what we see? ‘Private view’ confronts us with the inherent ambiguity of watching and being watched – a question that seems even more relevant today than ever before: ‘Big brother is watching us.’
