Pride Month! During the last We need to talk of this season, Maïté de Haan will discuss the philosophical concept of pride with fellow philosopher Martha Claeys. Many protest movements are inspired by pride, such as Black Lives Matter or the Pride movement. Pride here is also resistance. But it is a complex emotion, and a double-edged sword when recovered in a dangerous way. Pride can connect us but also divide us, even when we seemingly have the same goal in mind. Within queer movements, people distance themselves from the debate on gender inclusivity and transgender rights under the guise of 'pride', for example. How can one emotion be both a key to justice, and a powerful weapon to set us apart? Martha Claeys has a PhD in philosophy and recently published Trots - De filosofie van een emotie (Boom). Maïté de Haan is a philosopher and academic assistant at the University of Antwerp. Together with Julia Alegre Mouslim, de Haan is co-founder of the philosophical platform Troebel.
