At the invitation of DE SINGEL, the German historian and author Philipp Blom gives an exclusive lecture on the seasonal theme Echoes of Time. What does history teach us about the present and the seemingly uncertain future? How does the renewed focus on Greek tragedies cast fresh light on Western culture? Why do we find comfort in ancient stories time and time again?
Philipp Blom is known as 'the historian who has turned to the future'. He focuses in particular on the socio-cultural, political and economic consequences of climate change. In his book The Subjugation (2023) Blom examined the human obsession with dominating nature. His most recent novel, The Light Thieves (2024), is set in the 16th century of Giordano Bruno and Caravaggio, and paints an overwhelming panorama of the Italian Renaissance. Blom lives and works in Vienna, the city of the great classical composers Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Early in life, he wanted to become a violinist, and the instrument also returns in his work. During this opening lecture we listen to the historian and philosopher, but above all also to the great music lover Blom.
