One of the best books I have read in ages. [...] It is hard to believe that this is a debut. Oroppa can compete with great titles in world literature. Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer
At DE SINGEL’s invitation, Safae el Khannoussi delivers and exclusive lecture on this season’s theme Longing to Belong. In uncertain times and under the influence of geo-political tensions, people seek out safety and comfort. Longing to Belong can be interpreted in a broad range of ways: being part of something, being at home somewhere. These are merely small shifts in meaning. How can we come home in a world that is falling apart, and in which the collective power of a ‘union’ or a ‘united nation’ is increasingly coming under pressure?
Safae el Khannoussi made her debut in 2024 with Oroppa, thus delivering one of last year’s best books. The novel was awarded De Boon for fiction and non-fiction and the Libris Literatuurprijs. Oroppa, Europe in Moroccan Arabic, evokes the voices of the North-African diaspora which is inextricably linked to the history of this continent. After the lecture, Safae el Khannoussi will engage in a conversation with Abbie Boutkabout.
Safae el Khannoussi studied philosophy. She is currently working on her doctoral research into prisons in the Maghreb.
