1h Is 'L'Orfeo' an ode to music? To love? Or to its powerlessness? The answer remains unclear. What we do know, however, is that Monteverdi's masterpiece marked the start of the history of opera.
'L'Orfeo' underpins Muziektheater Transparant's baroque opera workshop for young people, an annual project that has its permanent home in deSingel and is one of our arts campus activities.
A group of young singers and instrumentalists take up the challenge of creating a special version of this baroque piece in a short and intense period of rehearsal. The director is Wouter Van Looy, and he is flanked by the Mexican choreographer and video artist Vivian Cruz. The conductor is Nicolas Achten, who is assisted by singing coach Laurence Renson and orchestra coach Marcin Lasia. The final result can be heard in our Red Hall, the Concertgebouw in Bruges and the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, in what is guaranteed to be an adventurous exploration of the first opera in history.
