Quatuor Mosaïques

Quatuor Mosaïques verenigt vier musici die sinds 1984 de interpretatie van barok en klassiek repertoire op authentieke instrumenten vernieuwen met gebruikmaking van historisch, musicologisch en instrumentaal onderzoek in combinatie met de technische en muzikale kennis die ze hebben opgebouwd bij de bespeling van moderne instrumenten. De Oostenrijkers Erich Höbarth, Andrea Bischof en Anita Mitterer ontvingen hun muzikale opleiding in Wenen, waar zij regelmatig in contact stonden met leden van verschillende ensembles, waaronder Concentus Musicus Wien onder Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Daar ontmoetten zij dertien jaar geleden de Franse cellist Christophe Coin. De cd-opname voor Audivis/Astrée van Haydns laatste drie strijkkwartetten opus 77 leverde direct succes op (Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d'Or). Het kwartet won de 1993 Gramophone Award for Chamber Music voor de opname van Haydns opus 20 en vervolgens ook de 1996 Gramophone Award for Chamber Music voor Haydns opus 33. Quatuor Mosaïques is momenteel bezig met de integrale opname van zowel Beethoven als Schubert waarvan enkele inmiddels uitgebrachte cd's door de vakpers zeer lovend zijn ontvangen. Erich Höbarth (1956) studeerde bij Franz Samohyl en Sandor Végh. Hij is oprichter en eerste violist van het Wiener Streichsextett. Van 1978 tot 1980 was hij lid van het Végh Kwartet en begon hij ook te spelen bij Concentus Musicus. Sinds 1980 is hij eerste soloviolist van de Wiener Symphoniker. Andrea Bischof (1957) volgde haar muziekopleiding in haar geboortestad Wenen. Zij is geïnteresseerd in zowel moderne als authentieke instrumenten en speelt in verschillende symfonieorkesten alsook in Concentus Musicus Wien. Christophe Coin (1958) studeerde aan het Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Parijs waar hij in 1974 de Eerste Prijs voor cello behaalde in de klas van André Navarra. Hij studeerde ook viola da gamba bij Jordi Savall. Hij speelt regelmatig in Concentus Musicus, Hesperion XX en The Academy of Ancient Music. Hij leidt de klassen voor barokcello en viola da gamba aan het conservatorium van Parijs. Quatuor Mosaïques treedt regelmatig op in Wenen, Parijs, András Schiffs Mondsee Festival, Salzburger Festspiele, Edinburgh Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Luzern Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Festival Aix-en-Provence, La Roque d'Anthéron. Voor het label Audivis/Astreé en Audivis/Valois maakte het kwartet een groot aantal cd's, waarvan vele door de vakpers zijn onderscheiden.

The Quatuor Mosaïques is an Austrian string quartet, founded in 1987 by Erich Höbarth, Andrea Bischof, Anita Mitterer, and Christophe Coin, four members of the Concentus Musicus Wien who play on historical musical instruments. The name of the quartet refers to mosaics and is intended to reference the way details impact on the complete work of art. They specialize in music of the 18th century. The three Austrian musicians and the French cellist Christophe Coin got to know each other in Vienna as members of Concentus Musicus working under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. With their shared experiences as a starting point, they decided to form a classical string quartet playing on period instruments. The primary aim was not to create the sort of ‘authenticity’ that belongs in museums, but rather to ensure in their work a living link to the great European quartet tradition. Hence an essential inspiration for the group was the Végh Quartet, of which Erich Höbarth had been a member for its last three years. The Quatuor Mosaïques has received the Gramophone Award for its interpretations of Haydn. It has given concerts with pianists András Schiff and Patrick Cohen, clarinettists Wolfgang and Sabine Meyer, and cellists Miklós Perényi and Raphaël Pidoux. In 2006 the Quatuor was invited to Spain to play the quartet of Stradivari instruments belonging to the Spanish Crown. It presented a programme of quartets by Arriaga at the Royal Palace in Madrid, which was subsequently recorded on CD. The Quatuor Mosaïques' very extensive repertoire includes rarely performed works by Pleyel, Tomasini, Werner, Jadin, Gross, Boëly, Schumann, and Brahms.
