Under the title '35m³ young architecture', deSingel is mounting a series of small-scale exhibitions in association with the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi). The title refers to the volume of the monolithic exhibition space in which up and coming Belgian architects present projects currently under construction, their ideas on paper, their built projects, statements or theoretical reflections. Each of these monographic exhibitions is accompanied by a modest publication that can also be downloaded.
NU architecture studio was founded by Arúnas Arlauskas, Armand Eeckels and Halewijn Lievens in Ghent in 2004. Their recent built projects include the Linq house with office in Ghent, the conversion for the Victoria theatre production company in Ghent, and the masterplan for Interieur 06 in Kortrijk. Their presentation at deSingel is intended to clarify both the process and the context of their work. The formwork for their very first project, a concrete kitchen unit for a house in Halvemaanstraat in Sint-Amandsberg (2004), set up ready to receive the fresh concrete, literally fills the exhibition space. This object not only represents an actual architectural element, but, as a note of self-criticism, also forms an obstacle to the visitor. The functionality of this enigmatic object is made apparent on the outside of the exhibition cube.
