Anthea Hamilton: innovative, ambitious and groundbreaking in a unique installation.
With Othello: A Play, British artist Anthea Hamilton creates her very first stage performance alongside long-term collaborator Delphine Gaborit. This new creation, premiering at DE SINGEL, marks a new and ambitious key moment in Hamilton's career. It further expands the performative possibilities of her sculptural and installation practice. Othello - the character, the icon, the play of the same name - is the starting point. Hamilton shows three figures playing, negotiating and wrestling with the limits of freedom, ambition and creation. She uses the possibility of the stage to unravel and re-imagine these dynamics, blurring the boundaries between the personal and the iconic. Othello: A Play once again demonstrates Hamilton's fascination with various systems, codes and media outside the tradition of visual art.
Anthea Hamilton works on the cutting edge between installation, sculpture, film and performance. In her practice, she dives into the meandering history of visual and cultural production, and uses her eye as a both subjective and productive lens through which she can see and re-arrange the world. Her works present an alternative and fragmented reality in which gender roles, sexuality, domestic life and different cultural traditions are no longer entrenched clichés, but become fluid notions. In 2022, Hamilton's work was on display in Antwerp when M HKA presented Mash Up, the first major retrospective dedicated to the artist's practice. In 2016, Hamilton was shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize for visual artists. Her work is exhibited worldwide.
