Le Cri de la Chair
Japanese Butoh dance (also known as dance of darkness or dance of the soul) is one of the sources of inspiration for ‘Le Cri de la Chair’ by the Burkinan dancer, choreographer and musician Seydou Boro. The group is positioned in a demarcated space, as in a ‘fogo’. In Dyula, the ‘fogo’ is a public place where people are allowed to speak about the most sensitive, difficult subjects. The scream alluded to in the title is a cry from a group whose every member is searching for a way to collectively move forward. A horde expressing the movement of a single body in a single breath. You will hear chants and text in Fon, the language spoken in southern Benin. The poetry describes the body as a ‘raw’ material: its pains, its pleasure, and its ageing. “Le Cri de la Chair’ is a physical performance about suffering, sweat and tears, but also about the power of togetherness.
