TRY_OUT MAPA
ON_OFF_SPACE TRY_OUT
Federico Protto and Jimena Pérez Salernoare committed to creating new worlds, each with its own rules, roles, and treasures. They do this by shifting and expanding their senses: the tactile, the sonic, movement, the invisible. They recalibrate their antennae and poles. At the same time, they transcend boundaries by imagining their ancestors and traditions, such as the Gauchos, the Tango, and the landscape of the Pampas. They borrow from these influences and repurpose their tools. They raise a flag and let it fall down a mountain, while observing the birth of a new island.
MAPA is an artistic research project with multidisciplinary outcomes such as lecture-performances, text collections, object installations, and choreographic performances. The project explores migration experiences and intergenerational trajectories to discover new ways of connecting, being together, and activating empathy in a constant state of being ‘the Other’.
During this presentation, the two performers work with scores and games, where their roles are constantly changing. Textile plays a central role as a tool to understand movement and connection. Originally, the word ‘mapa’ referred to the textile surfaces on which maps were painted in military contexts. MAPA redefines this concept by creating maps that are constantly shifting and reflect complex narratives.
ON_OFF_SPACE
MAPA is part of ON_OFF_SPACE, a new experimental workspace in DE SINGEL. This try-out takes place at a new location in our renovated L-Block.
ON_OFF_SPACE is a space in DE SINGEL where various art forms converge: dance, music, spoken word, performance, and installation art. It offers a platform for emerging initiatives and artists in development to create and explore.
