POST EXOTIC
We often describe non-Western artistic practices as pure, primitive and nostalgic. As the expression of a lost time, a quest, innocence. Apparently, even in post-colonial times we are unable to escape from some form of exoticism. This suggests that our thinking, our concepts and our dialogues are still not fundamentally decolonised. Just as political and economic globalisation are often an indication of neocolonialism, the globalisation of the arts seems to be characterised by Western colonisation, even monopolisation. This thought is the basis of the sixth ‘Salon de la Pensee’, which is part of our POST EXOTIC programme focus.
Under this heading we present two young South American choreographers: Amanda Piña and Fabian Barba. Their new creations aim to reconstruct ancient dances from their home countries, Chile and Ecuador respectively. Their artistic research has taken them in surprising directions. Here are young artists who question our viewpoints and advocate a different approach to cultures, worldwide.
