Thanks to globalisation, we have access to art from South America, Africa and Asia, and artists from all over the world find their way to our venues. Yet it is not always easy to relate to this work and to give it a place in our historically linear vision of art. For the artists themselves it can be confusing to position their postcolonial identity in relation to the Western tradition of contemporary art. This suggests that our thinking, concepts and visions on history and progress are still not fundamentally decolonised. Just as political and economic globalisation is entangled in neo-colonialism, the art world is still characterised by a Western monopoly on artistic values.
In Salon de la Pensée #6, we will search for a contemporaneity in which justice is done to incomparable stories, evolutions and artistic insights. Can we accept that there is not just one single artistic present, but many, informed by a multiplicity of evolutions and pasts? Or do we cling obstinately to our position and subject every artistic practice to the constraints of comparability?
