Elefant, or the vehicle of the 'four riders of the Apocalypse'. Why? Not only because the four members of the band are invariably enveloped in white fall-out overalls and plaster their faces with white paint -- giving them the appearance of messengers from a near future -- but also because they appear to want to prepare us for imminent calamity in their songs. We have no idea what's in store for us, but Elefant have clearly written the right soundtrack for it. They deal in genres that would seem to want to clash roughly with each other, , but in their subtly balanced doses in fact do what they have to perfectly. Wolf Vanwymeersch (The Van Jets, Gung Ho), Maarten Flamand (Antler King, Ian Clement, Cloon), Mario Govaert (Gung Ho, ’t Schoon Vertier) and Stijn Vanmarsenille (Future Old People Are Wizards) all speak the same musical dialect. What emerges is a timeless yet unique now-blend in which kraut, math rock, Oriental frills, sludge and pop rhyme fluently with each other.
