Telemann is a mystery. As a composer, he puts on the strangest collection of hats, and these lend great diversity to his music. Folksy, almost boorish dances are followed by highly sophisticated pieces that appear to have inhaled the frivolous perfume of the French court. Telemann's 'Völker-Ouverture' is a parade of wild Portugese, twirling Turks and mysterious Russians. It demonstrates his ability to masterfully and flexibly translate national idioms into the standard musical language of the baroque period. Since when have hopping and running also been national characteristics? This colourful oeuvre also displays a highly developed ability to skilfully undermine seriousness. Somewhat restless, and plagued by a lively imagination, the music searches for a balance between fantasy and sense.
Ewald Demeyere and his Bach Concentus have already amply demonstrated their ability to strike the perfect balance. This is shaping up to be a fine late-summer evening.
