Bang on a Can All-Stars & Lee Ranaldo

In 1987 the American composers Julia Wolfe, David Lang and Michael Gordon founded the contemporary music ensemble Bang on a Can. With a focus on innovation and experimentation, they now have hundreds of musical activities under their belt. The group invariably performs works that balance between loud and soft, sweet and brutal, simple and complex. Their repertoire stretches from avant-garde to rock, but also flirts with noise and pop. During this concert, you will discover Bang on a Can's versatility, their rebellion against rigid styles and the boundless energy with which they conquer the stage. Especially for our Guitars concert series, they are bringing Lee Ranaldo, the legendary guitarist of Sonic Youth, with them to deSingel! 'Electric Counterpoint' treats you to minimal music by the iconic Steve Reich. The genre lives on in compositions by the still-young guitar hero and composer Bryce Dessner (The National). His 'O Shut Your Eyes Against the Wind' is full of shifting textures and subtle, yet powerful tones. 'Stroking Piece' by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) provides contrast and moves from a simple orderliness to a chaotic mass of sound. The works of Fred Firth, David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) and Lee Ranaldo seamlessly connect to Bang on a Can's house style: headstrong, original and acrobatic.
