Why should early music not be able to provoke social discourse? Could it perhaps lead to an alternative New Year's concert with an inspired message and messenger? The new concept, produced by Muziektheater Lod, will from January 2010 become a yearly tradition at deSingel. On each occasion, shortly after the beginning of the New Year, a distinguished thinker and speaker will sketch out the state of the world and where it is heading, as they see it.
For the first such occasion, Purcell's theatre music forms the basis on which a new coda of contemporary sounds, words and graphics takes shape. With a theme that stems from Locke's aria 'Adieu to the pleasures'. It is definitely suited to Jean Paul Van Bendegem, who is a mathematician, philosopher and gifted speaker. His main field of interest is the philosophy of mathematics. However, he is equally concerned with the relationship between science and religion and between science and society. During this New Year speech, he will be faced, for the first time, with the formidable musicians of B'Rock. Composer Thomas Smetryns reworks Purcell's score; Gert Dooreman, the graphic artist and creator of books, will literally give shape to the concert.
