René Jacobs returns to Telemann’s Orpheus with a fresh ensemble!
Twenty five years ago, René Jacobs' rediscovery of Telemann’s Orpheuscame as a revelation. Now he returns to this sparkling work, together with a fresh ensemble of soloists. Refined and humorous, the libretto makes use of German, French and Italian, meaning that it is perfectly in tune with a European philosophy avant la lettre. The story also diverges somewhat from the familiar version. It is Orasia, the widow of the King of Thrace, who murders Eurydice out of jealousy and thus also plays the starring role. B'Rock Orchestra and choir are flawlessly in command of this music. With them, the rich modulations, the direct energy and the sometimes unexpected colours are in good hands.
