'Twill by twilight' is a tranquil commemorative work by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu for his American colleague Morton Feldman. Brilliant orchestration and the unique detail make this orchestral work, created in 1988, one of the masterpieces of the twentieth century.
The same can be said of Benjamin Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes'. The 'Four Sea Interludes' from that opera are principally evocative musical pieces that invoke a small fishing village and the sea. Something you can listen to without having any real knowledge of the plot.
Bernstein's symphony 'Kaddish' makes reference to the Jewish prayer sung for the dead during a service in the synagogue. Bernstein tried to make it more contemporary by adding new text. He thus produced a type of monologue by man, who puts forward doubts about his earthly existence, addressed to his Creator. At the composer's request, the text was rewritten by Samuel Pisar, a Holocaust survivor. This well-known international diplomat and judge has made the text more humble and humane. He has also written a poignant story about Auschwitz, without obsessing about the past. It is Pisar himself who will tell the story during the concert.
