Du côté de chez Proust
Prousts muzikale zielsverwanten
A rich musical tribute to Marcel Proust featuring Jan Michiels, Steven Isserlis...
Even for those who have not read In Search of Lost Time, the aroma of the "petite madeleine" will always be reminiscent of Marcel Proust’s magnum opus. It cost the French novelist 14 years of his life to write the seven-part cycle, the final three parts of which were only published after his death. In the first part, Swann’s Way, the "petite phrase" also appears alongside the famous madeleine. A small musical motif that reveals itself to Charles Swann and that crops up in a Sonata for Piano and Violin by a certain Vinteuil. From that point onwards, the "petite phrase" became a leitmotif in Proust’s novels. Vinteuil is a fruit of the imagination, a composer invented by the writer. But which existing sonata stimulated Proust’s imagination? Books have already been written about it. Proust himself gave a number of vague hints: Saint-Saëns' Violin Sonata could be a candidate, as could Franck, Lekeu or Pierné. We will not be able to solve the riddle. But during the festival Du côté de chez Proust we will be presenting a rich musical tribute to the great writer who was born 150 years ago and who died 100 years ago.
