All the action is set around the Channel. On the beach at Calais, a refugee is getting ready to swim across to a new future. On the other side, near Beachy Head, a transsexual woman says farewell to life. She leaps to her end. These are the starting points for two stage monologues by Gaea Schoeters that together form an ironic tragi-comedy. Wry and socially-critical, but never sombre. The new piece is reflected in a recently discovered play about migrants by William Shakespeare. Annelies Van Parijs has transformed the old text into the lyrics for songs, giving a soprano the role of commentator. This reflection on society reveals the alarmingly major similarities between our era and the 16th century.
