I Solisti del Vento
The final day of the festival starts with a serenade for woodwind by the curator Jonathan Harvey, which is dedicated to Mozart. The work was written in 1991 on commission to the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, where it was to 'warm up' the audience for a performance of Mozart's 'Die Zauberflöte'. Harvey's Serenade is of course full of references to Mozart's Singspiele. The flutes at the beginning are reminiscent of Papageno's flute-playing and the loud closing chord of the Serenade corresponds to the first chord of the overture. In this piece Harvey also sporadically quotes his own work, with excerpts from his opera 'Inquest of Love', for which he had himself actually been inspired by 'Die Zauberflöte'.
I Solisti del Vento continue the concert with a composition by Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996). 'Rain Spell' is
a typical score for this Japanese composer, who combines a post-Debussy sensitivity with elements from traditional Japanese music. There is also a composition by the young Flemish composer Annelies van Parys (b. 1975), a former student of Luc Brewaeys and Jonathan Harvey, among others. The orientally-inspired 'Mysterium' by Wim Henderickx sets the tone for the rest of this Sunday marathon.
