What if Beethoven’s father Johann had not noticed his son’s exceptional talent when he “yet again began scraping away on the violin without a score”? Then we would not have been able to whistle that delightful theme from the ‘Frühlingssonate’. Cheerful, fresh and youthful, this work is the antithesis of the stormy Sonata Opus 23. In both sonatas, violin and piano stand side by side as equal partners. Beethoven composed them with specific performers in mind. The violin virtuoso George Bridgetower was able to shine in the brilliant ‘Kreutzer Sonata’. In Beethoven’s final Violin Sonata Opus 96, on the other hand, the intimate dialogue plays a central role. Very much to the liking of the French violist Pierre Rode, who did not appreciate grand gestures. Poetry or bravura? With Faust and Melnikov, the two go hand in hand.
