Karima El Fillali merges Sufi poetry and Arabic vocals with contemporary sounds
The Dutch-Moroccan singer Karima el Fillali combines ancient Sufi poetry and traditional Arabic singing techniques with contemporary compositions and sampled beats. In her lyrics, she draws on the writings of Sufi mystics including Al-Hallaj and Ibn Arabi from the 10th to the 12th century. Their love poetry tells tales of light and darkness, joy and sorrow, violence, solitude, and peace. Fascinated by her father's heritage and Morocco’s spiritual and musical traditions, she ultimately decided to travel to the country herself. There, she began studying Arabic and immersed herself in both the gnawa culture and lyrical Arabic singing techniques. El Fillali is renowned for her ethereal voice, her enigmatic stage presence, and her captivating live performances. Her melodies are strongly inspired by the concept of tarab from religious Sufi music, which alludes to a feeling of ecstasy and the experience of a greater whole.
