‘Autobahn Utopia’ is a composition by Liese Van der Aa spread over several years. She took her inspiration from the sound and significance of urban ring-roads: enclosing arms that keep the city and its inhabitants captive in a spiral of violence and noise. Van der Aa tries to give a response to this poisonous violence. She tries to counter it with silence, space and the desire for calm. A composition with musicians in the eye of the storm, where there is not a breath of wind. One Trick Pony, Van der Aa’s new music-theatre company, is performing a first presentation of this work for the Festival of Architecture. The composition is being created specially for the roof of deSingel, where the sound frequencies of the adjacent Antwerp ring-road whistle through the roof’s unusual structure.
