MYTHOS: Tristan
Tristan en Isolde door de bril van Olivier Messiaen
Fri 05 May 2023 - Sun 07 May 2023
During the first edition of MYTHOS in 2021, we told the history of Orpheus and Eurydice as a reflection of the time. Now we turn our gaze to another legendary couple from Western art history: Tristan and Isolde - the original story of impossible love. From the married-off princess Isolde, who first wants to poison her companion Tristan, but after drinking a magic potion falls head-over-heels in love with him. For decades this myth has served as inspiration for artists, with Richard Wagner and his epic ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ taking the lead. During MYTHOS we shed light on the legend from the perspective of Olivier Messiaen, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. His fascination with Tristan and Isolde resulted in the triptych La Trilogie de Tristan et Yseult. We present two of these to you: a staged song recital for soprano, piano and dance entitled Harawi, and the spectacular Turangalîla Symphony for large orchestra.
