Rafael Toral slows jazz into a meditative listening experience.
Travelling Light, which premiered at the Venice Biennale, is a remarkable concert centred on Rafael Toral's guitar album of slowed-down jazz standards. Developed in parallel with Spectral Evolution, this project seeks a direct dialogue with the harmonic tradition of jazz. With a renewed focus on the history and culture of the guitar, Toral engages in conversation with soloists on acoustic instruments: Bruno Parrinha (clarinet), Rodrigo Amado (tenor saxophone), Yaw Tembe (flugelhorn), and Clara Saleiro (flute).
In Travelling Light, time slows down. The swing is stretched to its limits, turning each chord into an event - a small space that draws the listener in. The harmonies carry both an emotional undercurrent reflecting the sense of loss and uncertainty of our times, and a celebration of light and beauty, inspired by the rich jazz harmonies of the 1930s.
Travelling Light thus becomes a new journey through Toral's ever-expanding musical universe - between open soundscapes and fragile intimacy.
