A love story in the form of a song-cycle, a dramatic adventure. This describes Johannes Brahms’ ‘Die Schöne Magelone’, based on Ludwig Tieck’s novel of the same name about the love of the Provençal knight-errant Peter. Ludwig Tieck interwove seventeen poems into his long story, fifteen of which Brahms set to music.
To make the content of the songs more comprehensible, Brahms added spoken connecting texts from the story. Geert van Istendael translated and updated them into a modern fairy tale, which he himself will recite. The great German baritone Roman Trekel is swapping the Berlin State Opera and the Bayreuth Festspiele for the Blue Hall. Together with brilliant pianist Jan Philip Schulze, he brings this musical fairy tale to life.
