Between the synaesthesia of the senses and the grammar of fantasy lies an untrodden and inaccessible domain, a virtual space within which image and sound come together. A phantasmagorical space, analogous to Lacan's imaginary, symbolic and real order, and one that is exemplified by Tim Burton's version of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland', or Winsor McCay's 'Little Nemo in Slumberland', whose basis is the surrealistic adventures of Nemo who, in his white sleeping-suit, traverses terrifying areas of space and ends by being jolted awake after falling out of bed.
Similarly, there is the Russian silent film 'Aelita' by Yakov Protazanov, which tells the story of the engineer Losj. Because he can no longer cope with the Moscow of around 1920, he escapes to Mars in a rocket he has made himself, accompanied by a detective and a soldier from the Red Army. Each in his own way, McCay and Protazanov have thrown all visual conventions overboard. Oliva, Raulin and Baeken do likewise with the music. An intriguing symbiosis.
