The 32 Beethoven piano sonatas have signified a giant leap for musical mankind. It is a huge undertaking when a pianist decides to perform all of these sonatas. According to some, it is a risk that one should normally take at a more mature age, but in this case it would be a shame to have to miss out on the fresh interpretation by the thirty-year-old Till Fellner. As Alfred Brendel's heir, Fellner's style is characterised by an acute, intellectual analysis of the score, coupled with resolute and refined expression. His interpretation is inventive, bright and rich in detail. In his previous performances at deSingel, Fellner played the three sonatas opus 31 from the middle period and the late opus 101. We certainly won't deny you his crowning finale. They are a real challenge because Beethoven demands the utmost from the pianist in these three sonatas. They represent a synthesis of all the structures and feelings which Beethoven explored in all his previous sonatas. From intimate meditations to explosive eruptions, complex fugues to simple arias. Till Fellner takes up the challenge and draws you one step closer to the unfathomable genius of Beethoven.
The night before, Fellner introduces the last three sonatas in a lecture recital. Beethoven is also the central theme in the public masterclasses that complete Fellner's visit to deSingel.
