Two women encounter one another over the course of a single day in prison: Fatma, a feminist and activist who has been convicted for murder, and Sama, a young, ambitious documentary-maker who wants to tell Fatma’s story. They share their reminiscences, experiences, and deepest secrets. Initially there is a great deal of distrust, but before long curiosity and solidarity gain the upper hand, resulting in an intense friendship.
Woman at Point Zero is a gripping multimedia opera about exploitation and emancipation, inspired by the eponymous novel by the Egyptian writer and feminist Nawal El Saadawi. Composer Bushra El-Turk, director Laila Soliman, librettist Stacy Hardy and scenographer and film-maker Bissane Al Charif make this into a fascinating production. Under the leadership of director Kanako Abe, an unusual mix of Western and Eastern musical traditions sounds out, performed by a unique ensemble of traditional folk instruments.
