Sonder: a moving performance about grief, memory and AI.
How long can you keep on talking to someone who is no longer here? Can technology help us preserve someone who has vanished? What does artificial intelligence do to our emotional experience?
When visual artist Kaat Pype unexpectedly lost her mother, it brought her even closer to her father. She captured their shared grief in a series of photos, portraying him in the interiors of contemporaries’ one-woman households where someone was also missed. Director Yves Degryse filmed these encounters.
Together, they created the performance Sonder. With musical accompaniment by Berlinde Deman, Pype’s father speaks on stage to his late wife. Each evening, the grieving husband is briefly reunited with his beloved.
In Sonder, the boundary between life and death is temporarily broken using an artificial voice and imagery. Like Orpheus, who descended into the underworld in Greek mythology to bring back Eurydice, the creators build a bridge between what is and what once was. Thus Sonder is a tender and haunting attempt to bring the dead close one last time.
