A wooden plinth in the Antwerp cityscape becomes the backdrop to new stories
Collectif Faire-Part places a wooden replica of the plinth on which the statue of Leopold II stands in the Antwerp streetscape. The pedestal becomes the backdrop new stories and a different imagination. A wooden plinth in the Antwerp cityscape becomes the backdrop to new stories. With SOKL, Collectif Faire-Part presents a prelude to Dear Antwerp. From this season onwards, the ensemble of Congolese and Belgian film-makers becomes one of van DE SINGEL’s in-house artists. They tell new stories about Kinshasa, about Brussels and the connection between the two. They make films and photos, draw comic strips and organise events in which the dominant West European colonial discourse is challenged. For SOKL they place a wooden replica of the plinth on which the statue of Leopold II stands in front of the building of DE SINGEL. But unlike the original construction, this replica does not support a colonial king. Rather it serves as a backdrop to artists who want to showcase their own visions of power and colonisation. The king is gone, there is room for new stories. Via artistic actions, big or small, a diverse group of artists asks questions about colonialism today. A multi-layered story grows up around an empty pedestal in which a different imagination becomes visible.
