1h 15' In 1989 Marguerite Duras wrote 'De Waterafsluiter', a poignant short story inspired by a tragic story in the newspaper. On a hot summer's day a poor family commits suicide after an official turns off their water supply.
The word was central to Marguerite Duras. She used them sparingly. She gave everything she wrote a poetic compactness, in which she put things together without any causal or psychological connection. Moreover, she regarded the visualisation of it as banal.
How you stage the unnameable? The language virtuoso and fine actor Dirk Roofthooft takes up the challenge. And whenever language fails, Diederik De Cock lets sound speak, but quietly. Or is it loud silence? The music follows the mood of the story: the alienation, voyeurism, the discomfort, the heat and the sultry summer atmosphere. The mood is intensified through the use of standard instruments (tenor sax, baritone sax, guitar, piano and drums) played in an unusual way and against a constant background of realistic sounds.
