On two successive weekends the Toneelhuis and deSingel will together present the Belgian premiere of the complete 'Power Triptych'. Guy Cassiers is the director of this impressive triptych about the complex relationship between power, art and politics. The original scripts are by Tom Lanoye, Jeroen Olyslaegers, Guy Cassiers and Erwin Jans. Each part examines power from a different angle, followed by the viewpoints of the artists, those in power, and the victims. 'Mefisto forever' (2006) masterfully shows how a celebrated actor in thirties Germany compromises his soul in the name of art. Determined to fight the battle from within, he gradually becomes a tragic pawn on the chessboard of the Nazi terror. Is this simply a question of using the wrong strategy or is it mere opportunism?
