Jan Fabre - Troubleyn
The crying body (wereldcreatie)
Jan Fabre became an artist-in-residence at deSingel ten years ago. To mark the anniversary, the 2004-2005 season is a special Fabre year: in addition to two new solos, deSingel is presenting the creation of a large-scale work. Especially for the occasion, Jan Fabre is making 'The Crying Body', a work with which he is also preparing for his curatorship of the Avignon Festival in 2005. 'The Crying Body' is a preliminary study for 'L'histoire des larmes', a production to be performed in the Cour d'Honneur of the Papal Palace, that centres on 'the tears of the body' in all its manifestations: the fluids produced by the human organism in states of happiness, sorrow, fear, illness, effort and sexuality. How does a particular emotion externalise itself through bodily fluids? Has our handling of tears changed over time? 'The Crying Body' is a unique physical total spectacle, created with love of historical continuity, but very much in the here and now.
