Jan Fabre

He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Institute for Decorative Arts in Antwerp. He wrote his first plays between 1976 and 1980. At a very early age he also held his first art exhibitions and did numerous performances both in Belgium and abroad. The success of his production 'De Macht der Theaterlijke Dwaasheden' - which was presented at the 1984 Venice Biennale -- where he represented Belgium as an artist - earned him a major international reputation. Together with his company he tours Europe, the United States, Japan and Australia. His artistic work has been exhibited at exhibitions such as Documenta IX in Kassel (1992), the Biennale de Lyon (2000) and 'Over the Edges' in Ghent (2001). In 1999 he founded the 'Janus' art magazine. He will be the curator of the festival in Avignon in 2005.
