Luk Perceval - Münchner Kammerspiele
Othello van William Shakespeare
With "I am not who I am", Jago inverts the Bible words: "I am who I am," articulating the essence of this Shakespeare drama: delusion and deception, judgment based on opinion, not on facts. Othello's downfall is the result of his own projections and twisted thoughts based on phantasms conjured up by the machinations of Jago. In this manipulative struggle, human action is reduced to power and lust. Next to being a drama about the destructive powers of love, 'Othello' is also about 'being a stranger'. The "Moor of Venice" as Shakespeare calls him, is a black man in the world of white people. Feridum Zaimuglu, a second generation Belgian of Turkish extraction, is an author with an acute political consciousness. He was chosen to revise and tell the story.
