In the acclaimed Songs for No One (2021) – performed during Radiant Nights – theatre maker Nastaran Razawi Khorasani drew us into the invisible lives of two Iranian children who are growing up under the current Iranian regime. With This is not a dance she once again allows censored voices to speak.
Dance is officially banned in Iran. Since the Islamic Revolution, companies have had to close their doors there. Many dancers and choreographers have fled abroad. Those who still live there must be resourceful. How do they keep this art form alive? What may be shown and what not? As music and lighting whip each other up into an ever-greater frenzy, Khorasani tries to curb her body.
She gives the stage to the voices of choreographers and dancers living in Iran and the diaspora. How are they dealing with the dance ban? How do they practice their profession, what danger do they face, and what freedoms are they fighting for? This is not a dance is an intimate and moving tribute to the body that wants to move and to the art that must be made in any form.
